"How much does a photographer cost?" is one of those questions with a genuinely unhelpful answer: it depends. But it depends on specific, predictable things — the type of shoot, the experience of the photographer, what's included, and where you are. This guide gives real 2026 UK price ranges by photography type, explains what actually drives the cost, and helps you tell a fair quote from an inflated one.
what you're actually paying for
A photographer's fee isn't just the hour behind the camera. It covers pre-shoot planning, the shoot itself, hours of editing and retouching (often longer than the shoot), the kit and studio, insurance, and the experience that means it comes out right first time. When one quote is half another, the difference is usually in the editing, the licensing, or the number of final images — not the photographer being greedy or a bargain.
uk photography prices by type (2026)
headshots and portraits
A single professional headshot session typically runs £100–£250 for one to three retouched images. Actor headshots sit slightly higher for the multiple looks and casting-spec deliverables. Team and corporate headshot days are usually quoted as a day rate (from around £600–£1,200 for 10–20 people). Our own headshot sessions start at £145 for a single retouched image, with team days from £900 — see the pricing page for the full breakdown.
family and newborn
Family studio sessions generally run £150–£300 including a set of edited images, with prints or albums extra. Newborn sessions, which take longer and include props and styling, typically run £250–£450. Our family photoshoots are £195 with 10 edited images, and newborn sessions are £295 with 15 — both all-inclusive, no hidden print-unlock fees.
product and commercial
Product photography is usually priced per image or per batch — anywhere from £15–£40 per product for straightforward e-commerce shots, more for styled or lifestyle work. A half-day commercial shoot might run £400–£800. Our product photography starts at £140 per batch of 10 products. Read our explainer on the cyclorama wall for why a proper studio setup matters for consistent product imagery.
studio hire (bring your own photographer)
If you're a photographer yourself, or want to bring your own, hiring just the studio is far cheaper than a full-service shoot — typically £40–£100 per hour for a properly-equipped space. Our photography studio hire is £75/hour, £260 half-day or £480 full-day, including the cyclorama, lighting and parking. We cover this in detail in our guide on how much studio hire costs in Essex.
what drives the price up (and down)
- Experience: an established photographer charges more because they deliver reliably. Cheaper often means less consistent.
- Editing and retouching: the biggest hidden cost. More images, more retouching, longer turnaround = higher price.
- Number of final images: a session with 5 edited images costs less than one with 30.
- Licensing: commercial and advertising usage costs more than personal use. Always clarify what the licence covers.
- Location: central London studios charge 40–60% more than the same setup an hour outside the city.
- Add-ons: makeup artists, extra crew, rush turnaround, prints and albums all add to the base fee.
how to avoid overpaying (and underpaying)
- Get the inclusions in writing. How many final images? What licence? Prints included or extra? Rush available?
- Compare like with like. A £99 offer with three images isn't cheaper than a £195 session with ten — do the per-image maths.
- Watch for print-unlock models. Some cheap sessions make their margin by charging heavily for the images afterward. Ask upfront.
- Beware the too-good-to-be-true. Photography has real costs. A price far below the market usually means inexperience or hidden extras.
- Value transparent pricing. A studio that publishes its rates has nothing to hide — that's a good sign.
