Studio rental prices in the UK vary wildly — anything from £25/hour in a converted garage to £300/hour for a high-end central London cyclorama. For Essex specifically, here's what the market actually looks like and what to expect when you book.
what you're actually paying for
Studio hire isn't just a room — the rate covers the kit you don't have to bring. At a properly equipped Essex studio, the hourly or day rate should include:
- Use of the cyclorama wall (see our explainer on what is a cyclorama wall).
- Professional lighting kit — typically Aputure or Profoto LED/strobe setups worth £8-12k retail.
- Backdrops, grip equipment, C-stands, sandbags, modifiers.
- Makeup and changing areas.
- High-speed Wi-Fi and tethering station.
- Free parking for crew and talent.
Studios that charge less than £60/hour rarely include all of this — you'll typically be hiring an empty room and bringing your own kit. For a working photographer or content production team, that's often false economy by the time you've factored in van rental and grip costs.
hourly vs half-day vs full-day rates
hourly (£60-100/hour)
Best for quick single-setup work — a 1-hour headshot session, a single product shot batch, a tight piece of social content. The setup-tear-down time eats into the booking, so hourly only really works if you genuinely need 60 minutes or less of shoot time.
half-day (£260-380, 4 hours)
The sweet spot for most photography shoots. Enough time for proper setup, multiple looks or setups, and unhurried shooting without paying for hours you won't use. Most brand and lifestyle shoots run as half-days.
full-day (£480-720, 8 hours)
For full productions, content days, team headshot days, multi-look fashion shoots, or anything with a model and HMU schedule. The per-hour rate is meaningfully cheaper than hourly stacking, and the day length removes any time anxiety.
essex vs london pricing
Central London cyclorama-equipped studios — particularly in Shoreditch, Hackney Wick and Stratford — start at around £100/hour and rise to £200-300/hour for cinema-grade rooms. Day rates of £1,500-3,000 are typical. For productions that don't need a London postcode, an hour east on the A12 saves anywhere from 40-60% on day rates.
We see this regularly with London-side clients — see our London location page for the full breakdown on what's different and what's the same. Most clients drive up and back in a day, save the central London markup, and don't pay congestion charge or ULEZ.
