The hardest thing about a family photoshoot isn't the photography — it's getting everyone looking, smiling and not blinking at the same moment, especially with young kids in the mix. The best family images look effortless precisely because the session was planned to feel that way. Here are family photoshoot ideas that produce natural, wall-worthy portraits rather than stiff, everyone-say-cheese ones.
lead with connection, not the camera
The images families frame are almost never the posed everyone-looking-at-the-lens shots — they're the in-between moments: parents looking at a giggling toddler, siblings whispering, a grandparent's hand on a shoulder. A good session builds these in deliberately. We shoot the formal group photo (you'll want it) but spend most of the time creating little interactions that produce genuine expressions. Prompts like 'all squeeze in and tickle the youngest' get real laughter that no 'say cheese' ever will.
pose ideas that work for every family
- The huddle: everyone close, heads leaning in — works for any group size and reads as warm and connected.
- Walking together: holding hands in a line, moving toward the camera — natural, dynamic, great for kids who won't stand still.
- Parents framing the kids: mum and dad either side, children in front — a clean, classic composition.
- Piggybacks and lifts: movement and play — some of the best candid frames come from these.
- Seated on the floor: everyone down at the kids' level, relaxed and informal.
- Individual moments: each child solo, the couple alone, just the siblings — variety for the final gallery.
themes and looks to consider
A theme gives the session direction. Clean and modern (neutral tones on a bright white cyclorama) is the most popular and the most timeless. Cosy and warm (knits, soft lighting, muted earth tones) suits autumn and winter. Playful and colourful (a single bold backdrop colour, relaxed outfits) works brilliantly for families with young kids. Seasonal themes — an autumn or Christmas family shoot — are worth planning ahead for, as the best slots book out early.
colour palettes: coordinate, don't match
The single most useful styling rule for family photos: coordinate, don't match. Everyone in identical white shirts and jeans looks dated and staged; everyone in the same palette with variations in tone and texture looks intentional and modern. Pick two or three colours you all like and let each person dress within them. Our full guide on what to wear for a family photoshoot breaks down the palettes that photograph best and the patterns to avoid.
keeping toddlers and young kids happy
This is where sessions are won or lost. A few things that genuinely help:
- Time it right. Book after a nap and a snack, never before. A tired or hungry toddler ends the session early.
- Shoot the group first. Get the whole-family shots done while everyone's fresh, then move to play-led candid frames.
- Bring bribes. Snacks, a favourite small toy, the promise of a treat after. No shame in it.
- Let them be kids. The best photos often come from the moment the planned pose falls apart and everyone laughs.
- Keep it short. Sixty minutes is plenty. We pace the session for the youngest attention span in the room.
don't forget the dog
Your dog is part of the family, and including them makes for some of the most characterful images. Bring treats and a favourite toy, and let us know in advance so we can plan the pace. We're used to working around all sizes and temperaments — and yes, we have a clean-up area for muddy paws.
why a studio session takes the stress out
Outdoor family shoots depend entirely on the weather and the light, both of which are unreliable in the UK. A studio session is warm, the lighting is consistent, and your date is guaranteed — no rescheduling because it's raining. Families travel to our Tiptree studio from Maldon, Witham, Braintree, Chelmsford and across Essex for exactly that reason, plus free parking and a warmed room that keeps little ones comfortable.
booking your family session
Our family photoshoots run from £195 including 10 edited images, with same-week turnaround. Bigger groups can book the extended 90-minute slot. See the family photoshoots page for details, or enquire via the booking form and we'll find a time that suits.
